The research project CIUTAT SONORA: MUSIC, SO I SOROLL A VALÊNCIA (1609-1813) [CIGE/2021/1651], whose Principal Investigator is Ferran Escrivà Llorca (Universidad Internacional de Valencia) organizes the International Conference Resounding cities. Music, sound, noise in urban environment (1500-1800). The conference is a meeting of national and international experts to analyze and discuss the role of music in the communicative processes of the urban contexts of the Ancien Régime. From the methodological perspective of urban musicology, this focuses on the physical and symbolic space of the city as a place of negotiation of reciprocal relations between individual and institutional subjects.

The conference will address the possible ways of reconstructing these communicative processes, their subjects and modalities. This includes topics such as sound perception and listening, the intellectual and sensory response of the inhabitants, and the reconstruction of soundscapes. The implications of urban musicology in other research fields, such as cartographic application or digital humanities, will also be discussed.

Challenges such as comparing different urban centers, the diachronic study and the relationship between communicative processes and the preserved musical repertoires are raised. The final purpose is to enrich the methodological framework of urban musicology and deepen the understanding of music as an essential element of city life.

This conference provides an excellent opportunity to reflect on the latest advances in the study of music in urban contexts in the Modern Age. Therefore, we invite the academic community to participate in this discussion actively, consolidating a useful contribution to the development of the discipline and its impact on other research fields.

The conference will be held at the Centre Cultural “La Nau” of the Universitat de València (historical building), in the city’s heart and very well-connected to Valencia’s main cultural and tourist attractions. Rooms: Aula Magna, Seminars 1 and 2 and the Capella de la Sapiència.

RECOMMENDATIONS

We recommend booking a hotel in the neighbourhood near the city centre. Avoid the hotels next to the congress venue (Plaza del Ayuntamiento). They are for tourists. The Ruzafa area is nice, also El Carmen (a lot of nightlife). Another option is to choose somewhere far away but well communicated with the metro station “Colón” as, for example, Marítim or Ayora.
